Love Is

When we were asked to write a little piece on what “Love is”, for our gorgeous friend Eric, we were both honoured and frightened. Love is different for different people and it can mean so many things. I love coffee and cake however the love I have for coffee and cake is different to the love I have for my parents. The love I have for my parents is not like the love I have for my partner, though coffee and cake are on par with the love I experience with my partner haha! The love I experience when my nieces call my name is again different to the love I feel when my sister (their mum) calls my name.

This pandemic made most of us realise how important life and loved ones are. We looked at our work life balance and assessed the relationships we have with people. I was struck to the core by the extraordinary movements of BLM, the support for our NHS Hero’s (National Health Service) and recently the inauguration of the 46 th president, Joe Biden. His words were steeped in deep healing for humanity and how WE can make this world a better place. A place that opens the hearts of all people, is inclusive of all people, and is drenched in the language of love. I watched the fiercely talented Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman speak her truth, and it resounded and reverberated and broke my heart, for her truth was my truth. I was prised open and wept, uncontrollably, for the moment we had all been waiting for. A moment in which we were inspired and encouraged to look beyond ourselves and our selfish needs. A moment in which we all realised;

we are an extension of each other.

I know I feel love soul deep. However I struggle to find the right words to explain it, because can we really explain what love is? I may not be able to give you everything in this post, but the following poem might come close. I came across “Love is” many years ago and I had no idea it was scripture taken from the bible. I am not Christian, or hugely religious but this passage spoke to me at a time

when darkness was my only comfort. For me, it sums up perfectly what “Love is…”

Corinthians 13:13

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

May we always find a way to love even when the chips are down, and the pain is too much. May we always reach for the divine within us.
